What is Be-Ro?
The company was founded as a tea and grocery company in 1875 by Thomas Bell – who produced the world’s first self-raising flour.
When Be-Ro released their self-raising flour in 1923, the recipe book was given out for free to help lower-income families create meals with the flour and raise its popularity (plain flour was the main choice in the early 1900s).
Who Bought Them?
In more traditional times, the books were aimed at housewives and their daughters, when women did most of the home cooking and baking while men were at work.
Their retro branding and pocket-sizing make them stand-out, as most modern cooking books are bigger and usually contain photographs of the food within the pages.
The books would have been passed down or given as gifts when women moved out of the family home when they were married.
The books are still produced today and are in its 41st edition – but they are nowhere near as popular as they were.
Can You Still Use Them?
While the books ignite a feeling of nostalgia in some people – the recipes are backdated as the technology we use, the science of cooking at more advanced recipes are more appealing to modern bakers and cooks. The images in the book don’t stimulate the senses like modern cookbooks and videos!
