WeBuyBooks Partners with My Name’5 Doddie Foundation

You can now donate the money from your sale on webuybooks to My Name’5 Doddie Foundation!

We’ve launched a feature on our website and app, which allows you to donate the money from your sale to one of our partner charities. That means you can do good without spending a penny of your own! Just sell your unwanted books, CDs, DVDs and games to us.

Whilst donating unwanted items to your local charity shop is a great way to give back, they then have to invest in other resources to sell these items. That includes staff wages, rent and energy bills. When you sell your unwanted items to webuybooks, you can donate the sale value directly to the charity instead. That means the charity is guaranteed the money, without having to make a sale.

As part of this initiative, we’re excited to announce that we've partnered with the My Name’5 Doddie charity! We’ve worked with My Name’5 Doddie before when we auctioned a rare first edition of The Hobbit to raise funds for this incredible charity. It was sold for an amazing £3,458, half of which went to My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Now we’re taking it a step further by making them an official charity partner!

Who is a My Name’5 Doddie Foundation?

My Name’5 Doddie is a charity raising money for research into Motor Neuron Disease and to support those living with MND. The charity was founded by rugby legend Doddie Weir OBE, a former Scottish international and British and Irish Lions player. Doddie founded the charity after he was diagnosed with MND in 2017.

MND is a life-shortening disease, which currently has no cure. It prevents signals from the brain from reaching other muscles in the body. Over time, this weakens muscles and they eventually stop working. It tends to progress rapidly, with ⅓ of people succumbing to MND within a year of diagnosis. Doddie, his charity and the thousands of people affected by MND across the UK are unwilling to accept this.

The charity organises events up and down the country to raise money for the fight against MND. Thanks to Doddie’s incredible career, the charity has close ties with the rugby community who have hosted a number of dinners, matches and other events to raise money. Indeed, they are the official charity partners of Scottish Rugby and the British and Irish Lions Trust. They’ve also worked with a number of brands to release merchandise such as MaxiMuscle, OddBalls and Genius Brewing. But their main source of money comes from grassroots fundraising. From cross-country bike rides to pub quizzes, and golf days to sponsored walks, it all helps. And now we’re doing our bit to help too.

How Will Your Donation Help?

My Name’5 Doddie has committed millions of pounds for research into MND. They work closely with the research community to donate to the research projects likely to prove most fruitful. That includes research into the causes of MND, treatment and to try and find that all-important cure.

The charity also donates a portion of its funds to support those living with MND and their families. They provide this money to the MND Association and MND Scotland who then distribute this to individuals and families. This money is spent on things like hoists, wheelchairs and respite care to improve people’s quality of life.

How Does Our Charity Feature Work?

The process of selling your items will remain the same, but instead of entering your payment details at checkout, you’ll simply choose to donate to charity instead. When you select this option, you’ll then be able to choose to donate to one of our partner charities, including the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

On average, our customers make around £30 by selling their unwanted stuff to webuybooks. Plus, when you sell over £25 worth of items, we automatically increase the amount we pay out by 5%! So, that’s £31.50 that you could donate to one of our charities. The more items you sell to us, the more money you will be able to raise for My Name’5 Doddie, helping the fight against MND.
