Summer is almost upon us, and in order to truly enjoy those long-awaited summer holidays, you need a good book. Now, choosing said book can be a bit of a nightmare at the best of times; first of all, you have to decide which genre would best suit the holiday (we don’t very well want a deep see horror story for a cruise around the Caribbean now do we…), then you must decide on the author, and finally, you have to choose which book in 100 strong series. And in the end, just choosing the book with the nicest looking cover (we’ve all done it).

So, to avoid that, we have put together a shortlist of some of our top summer reads to really get those holiday juices flowing in 2022. Summary:

  1. We do what we do in the dark – Michelle Hart
  2. Book Lovers – Emily Henry
  3. Briefly, A Delicious Life: A Novel – Nell Stevens
  4. Hurricane Girl – Marcy Dermansky
  5. In A Sunburned Country – Bill Bryson

1. We do what we do in the dark – Michelle Hart

Yet to mourn her mother’s death, Mallory, unsuspectingly meets an older woman at her gym. This unlikely meeting set her life on a completely new trajectory, impacting her so deeply that even after the newly discovered relationship ends, she is still irrevocably changed. This subtle, intricately woven novel explores the effects that we, as humans, can have on one another and how our bonds can alter who we are.

2. Book Lovers – Emily Henry

In a summer romance, inspired by countless rom-coms, running off into the sunset with the person of your dreams, is something we all want. Right? Well, that dream isn’t for everyone, especially when you work with said ‘rom-com’ on a daily basis. If anything, you may come to resent the idea of stumbling across true love on holiday, especially when cliché hits the roof and you are invited to a sleepy little town with, of course, your professional arch-nemesis… will love prevail or will the pessimist shine through.

3. Briefly, A Delicious Life: A Novel – Nell Stevens

Next on our list is supernatural historical fiction. In life our protagonist went by the name of Bianca, now in the form of a spirited ghost, she is chained to a small town in Mallorca. It’s been four hundred years since Bianca’s death in 1473, and to her unsuspecting delight, a new family have moved to the town from Paris. Bianca quickly becomes enamoured with the family, especially the quirky cigar-smoking writer, George and her sickly lover, Chopin. A lovingly bizarre story of love, loss and longing.

4. Hurricane Girl – Marcy Dermansky

If you’re looking for love, tragedy, horror and comedy all in one place, then this novel may be the perfect fit for you. The story follows the trials and tribulations of a certain Allison Brody after she breaks up with her long-term boyfriend. She finally settles after buying a beach house until it is destroyed in a storm, that is. From there, things only get more complicated, she meets a new man and ends up going home with him, which is great! until he breaks a glass jar over her head… but that’s not it, then she falls in love with the brain surgeon that fixes the hole in her head, I mean, where does it end…

5. In A Sunburned Country – Bill Bryson

If you can look past the snakes, spiders, sharks, crocodiles, riptides, deserts, and everything else that has the means and would probably enjoy killing you then Australia is a wonderful place. In a Sunburnt County is a testament to this, told in the memorable words of Bill Bryson as he recounts his escapades around the scorched country. Taking you far beyond the tourist routes to clean cities, cold beer, and endless cheerfully extroverted Australians! A gleefully entertaining tour of a magnificent country and a must-read.

And so, our list comes to an end. We hope that you have been able to take some inspiration to make your choice just a little easier. Enjoy your summer reading!
