5 Roald Dahl Books You Must Read

Roald Dahl Books Every year Roald Dahl fans up and down the country get together on the September 13th to celebrate the official Roald Dahl Day.  Organising an array of Roald Dahl inspired activities and events it is a fun and enjoyable way for adults and children to celebrate one of the most loved children’s authors of our time!

Here at We Buy Books we thought we’d get in on the act too, showing our appreciation for the legendary children’s author we’ve come up with our top 5 Roald Dahl books! And I’ll apologise in advance if your favourite isn’t on the list, but I’m afraid you’ll have to blame the man himself for producing too many classics! So lets get started!

James and the Giant Peach

James and the Giant Peach by Roald DahlReleased in 1961 James and the Giant Peach was met with wide commercial acclaim and was an instant success. The story focuses on an English orphan boy who experiences a surreal, cross-world adventure in a gigantic, magical peach meeting a number of magical garden bugs along the way.

In 1996, after numerous offers had been declined by Dahl, a film adaption of the children’s classic was created after his widow, Liccy Dahl, approved an offer from Disney.

Since its publication James and the Giant Peach has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, translated into 34 languages and, like the Peach, its popularity continues to grow!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald DahlThree years later and Dahl was at it again, this time releasing the classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Another massive success, it has sold over 13 million copies worldwide and has been adapted for both film and stage performance.

The story focuses on a poor young boy, Charlie Bucket, who is fascinated by the local chocolate factory owned by famous chocolatier Willy Wonka. Charlie, despite all the odds, gets his hands on a Golden Ticket, which grants him access into Willy Wonka’s factory. The five lucky winners, unknown to them, are competing to takeover the factory as Wonka seeks to find an heir and it is Charlie who strikes lucky.

Fantastic Fox by Roald Dahl

Fantastic Fox

Published in 1970 Fantastic Fox was another Roald Dahl classic. The plot focuses on a tricky, clever fox named Mr Fox and focuses on how he outwits farmers to steal food for his family. But the farmers want revenge and are out to get the sneaky fox!

Like many of his books, Mr Fox was adapted for film by director Wes Anderson in 2009.

The BFG

The BFG Roald DahlLoved by all, The BFG or Big Friendly Giant was published in 1982 and to this day it is still captures the imagination of children of all ages.

The plot focuses on a young orphan girl named Sophie who is whisked away to Giant Country by the BFG! She soon realises that, despite his size, the BFG isn’t there to harm her and instead his job is to deliver nice dreams to children and protect them from the mean giants. After defeating the mean giants together Sophie and the BFG live happily next door to each other in London!

Though, this wasn’t the first time the world had encountered the Big Friendly Giant, he made his first appearance in Dahl’s 1975 story Danny, the Champion of the World.

Out of all his stories the BFG was close to Dahl’s heart and In 1989 the story was adapted for film. On Christmas Day that year ITV aired an animated film based on the book and it was a huge hit.

Matilda

Matilda by Roald DahlOne of Roald Dahl’s last publications before his death in 1990, Matilda was published in 1988 and tells the story of an extraordinary child with incredibly harsh parents.

Ill-treated by her parents Matilda has a unique, unexpected power of telekinesis and uses it to perform tricks on the much-hated Miss Trunchbull. Forming a thriving friendship with teacher Miss Honey Matilda there’s a happy ending for the gifted child who has suffered years of neglect from her unlawful parents.

Again, Dahl’s story captured the imagination of both children and adults and in 1996 it was adapted for film!
