Here at WeBuyBooks, we love to read, and naturally, we love to encourage everyone to dive into a good book.

With Christmas coming up and schools soon to close, we thought it would be a great idea to put together a collection of our favourite books for those on their school holidays to read and enjoy. We have selected a few of our favourite easy reads that will suit children both in the earlier stages and the later stages of education.

So, let’s begin!

1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This iconic children’s book tells the story of a week in the life of this little caterpillar as it sets out to fill its belly. Full of colourful pictures and easy-to-read text, it is a fun challenge for children in the early stages of reading and a delight to brighten up any Christmas holiday.

2. The Gruffalo

The Gruffalo

It’s hard to find anyone who hasn’t heard of the Gruffalo, and rightly so. This all-time favourite follows the adventures of a small mouse on its journey through the deep dark wood and its encounters with all manners of scary beasts. Even the smallest of creatures can teach us the most valuable of lessons.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea

The Tiger who came to tea has been enjoyed by many for over 50 years. It’s fair to say it hasn’t lost anything in that time and is still one of our favourite books for the Christmas holidays. It tells the story of a young girl and her mother having tea when suddenly one of the most unlikely guests appears at their front door to join them. A perfect short story supplemented with fantastic, vibrant artwork to make this Christmas one to remember.

4. The Tale of Peter Rabbit

The Tale of Peter Rabbit

The beautifully illustrated ‘Tale of Peter Rabbit’ follows the trials and adventures of a young and misbehaving rabbit as he munches his way through Mr McGregor’s garden and narrowly escapes capture. This book is part of a thoroughly enjoyable, light-hearted series by Beatrix Potter, perfect for children in the mid to late primary years. A perfect light read for all those little readers looking for a short story or two over the Christmas holidays.

5. James And the Giant Peach

James And the Giant Peach

Many people know ‘James And The Giant Peach’ from the 1996 film, but it has its origin as one of the most loved Roald Dahl stories. James is sent to live with his two cruel aunts’ after his parents are eaten by a huge rhinoceros that has escaped from London Zoo! But in his unfortunate new home, he makes the most unlikely of friends who risk their lives to set out across the ocean on a most wonderful adventure. A perfect book for those in the later years of primary with a bit more text to get through. A perfect adventure to keep the kids entertained over Christmas, especially for those who love the film.

6. Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s Web

A story of the blossoming friendship between a rather intelligent spider and a little pig. It is a heart-warming story of friendship in one of the most unlikely places and between some of the most unlikely creatures—a lovely story to make this Christmas, a Christmas like no other.

7. Goodnight Mister Tom

Goodnight Mister Tom

Goodnight Mister Tom is about a young World War 2 evacuee named William Beech. When William is sent to the country to escape the Blitz happening in London, he is placed with Mr Tom Oakley. Initially, he struggles to adjust to the new way of life, but things soon start to take a turn for the better. A must-read this holiday for anyone at late primary stage or above.

8. Swallows and Amazons

Swallows and Amazons

‘Swallows and Amazons’ tells the story of the children from two families and their lake district adventures during the school holidays. They face many challenges in their trusted dinghy—a classic must-read story for any confident reader Christmassy readers to enjoy.

9. The BFG

The BFG

Roald Dahl’s classic, much-loved story tells the tale of a young girl who befriends a giant. After fearing for her life, her new friends explain to her that he is the ‘Big Friendly Giant’ (BFG), but the other giants aren’t quite so nice and will try to eat her if they find her! An imaginative and delightful story for mid to late primary ages onwards.

10. The Hobbit

The Hobbit

An epic fantasy story about the grand adventure of a small unsuspecting hobbit called Bilbo Baggins. When a band of dwarves and a somewhat overfamiliar wizard turn up on his doorstep, the stage is set to turn his life upside down as they travel far and wide to reclaim something that was lost. The ultimate fantasy story that any confident reader can enjoy, child and adult alike. So that’s it for our favourite kid’s books this Christmas. Whether your children are just starting out in the world of books or they are looking to dive into the extraordinary world of Middle Earth, there’s something for them here!
