How to Survive the Six Week Holidays Without Spending a Fortune

How to Survive the Six Week Holidays Without Spending a Fortune

Everyone loves spending the six week holidays with their kids, but we have to confess, it’s a long time to keep yourselves entertained. There will undoubtedly be a little boredom over the period, and it’s unrealistic to go out and spend money every day.

We’ve got a list of things you can do to enjoy the six week holidays without spending a fortune.

1. Try a Money-Saving Challenge

Try a Money-Saving Challenge

With the summer holidays 3-4 weeks away and most people's paydays at the end of the month, it’s the perfect time to start a money-saving challenge.

You don’t have to do anything crazy like skipping your food shop; you could set yourself a few smaller challenges. For example, if you have a coffee every weekday that costs £3, you could save £60 in thirty days – enough to take the kids for a day out.

Look at your spending habits and see where you spend most of your money, then set yourself a challenge.

2. Plan Your Meals

While this may take some time and can be painstakingly dull if you don’t like to cook or prepare meals, it can save you a considerable amount in the long run, especially if you free bulk cooked food.

You can even get your kids involved and reward them with a takeaway or a treat on a specific day. You don’t have to stick to it religiously, but at least it guides you.

3. Ditch Expensive Brands

Ditch Expensive Brands

While we all have our preferences for certain products, a lot of the time, we’re just buying a brand and can get a similar product for cheaper.

Think about what you’re willing to sacrifice and what you aren’t. For example, if you’re a mayo lover, you might find it hard to ditch the Hellmann’s. But cleaning products, do you need the most expensive?

4. Walk More

Walk More

How often do we fill our cars up and then a few days later think where did all that fuel go? We make many short trips that soon add up, so walking will take your petrol bill down.

If you’re travelling far then, it’ll be cheaper to take the car, but walking could be a possibility for trips to the park or family members’ houses.

5. Take Your Meals With You

Take With You

While it’s nice to eat out when you go out for the day, it can get expensive. It’s much cheaper to buy a loaf of bread, some sandwiches and lunchbox fillers and make it yourself.

And let’s be honest, I can’t ever remember complaining about a good old fashioned packed lunch on a day out!

6. Cancel Subscriptions

Cancel Subscriptions

If you’ve got subscriptions you could live without for a month or two, cancel them. We’ve all got our hobbies or things we enjoy doing, so don’t go too crazy and stop enjoying yourself.

Check your bank accounts for any subscriptions you may not have noticed or cancelled properly; they could take money from you.

7. Sell Items Around Your Home

If you’ve got plenty of items around your home, you can generate some cash by selling them using apps like Shpock, Gumtree or Vinted.

You’ll have to invest your time into this one, but it’s well worth it if you have a few items to sell.

8. Sell Your Books to We Buy Books
