Drop that Kindle! 5 reasons printed books rule
Nothing quite beats the look or feel of a printed book. But, it seems that we aren’t the only ones that think so. Plenty of people are getting tired of too much screen time, as sales of consumer e-books dropped 17% last year. Books are a great way to step away from the screen.
1. They’re kinder to your eyes
You won’t go square eyed with a printed book. Let’s face it; we have enough screen time in our day already, without staring at a Kindle for hours on end in the evening. Give your peepers a rest and curl up with a good old paper book. Paper books won’t strain your eyes, but they might still keep you up all night if you find a good page-turner. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
2. Friends forever
A print book will be with you for life, unless you decide to flog it. It doesn’t really matter if you drop a book on the floor, so long as it doesn’t land in a puddle, then maybe you are in trouble. But the same can’t be said for a Kindle, or any other E-reader. Avoid any heart-stopping moments and stick to a paper copy. Nothing sends you into panic mode quite like the moment you drop an expensive gadget on the floor. One fall could be the end for a Kindle. But with a book you can drop it, throw it at a wall (we wouldn’t recommend it) and it will still be in one piece, ready to pick up and read again.
3. Little reminders of old times
You’ll take a trip down memory lane when you rummage through your old book collection. That battered looking copy of Mice and Men will remind you of those English lessons in secondary school. And let’s not forget R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps books – they’ll remind you of simpler times. They were probably the scariest books that anyone ever read as a child. Even the covers of the book struck fear into the hearts of children everywhere.
4. You can swap books
Who else loves getting new books for holidays? We sure do! But we don’t love trying to stuff them back into our suitcase. Books are great to leave behind on holiday at reception, or by the poolside, for other people to enjoy. You could even swap the books that you’ve read back-to-back with your friends, family and colleagues. Even better, swap them for cash and send them to us. We’ll buy your old books so that you can clear some space and buy some new ones. Wahey!
5. Make your mark
With a physical copy of a book you can make notes, underline points you want to remember, highlight your favourite quotes and bookmark the best pages. Even if this can be done on a Kindle, it’s just not quite the same. We love picking up an old book and flicking to all the dog-eared pages.
