When we think of long, hot summer days under the beating sun, we immediately think of a good book. What better way to spend a summer’s day than enjoying a page-turner on a comfy sun lounger with a refreshing drink? We honestly don’t think there is a better way. And seeing as summer holidays are on the horizon, we thought that time was ripe to put together a list of our top five sizzling summer reads, perfect for getting your teeth into whilst on vacay!
This iconic novel may be almost 100 years old, but its themes still feel very contemporary. Set in the summer of 1922 in affluent Long Island, the plot is narrated by graduate Nick Carraway and documents the events surrounding the super rich and mysterious Jay Gatsby, his lavish but puzzling parties, and his obsession with the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Focusing on themes such as the American Dream, social class, materialism and relationships, this short but punchy classic should be top of your book list this summer.
Taking place in blisteringly hot South Carolina in 1964, this gripping and moving novel follows 14-year-old orphan, Lily Owens, as she and her maid Rosaleen run away from her abusive father. They follow signs to the vibrant and intriguing house of the honey-making Boatwright sisters, where Lily discovers monumental truths about her past and the realities of life. Full of emotive topics, including race, relationships, love and religion, this is a novel that you will still be thinking about in autumn and beyond.
A 90s classic, this famous book is roller-coaster ride. Beginning as a backpacking adventure led by young English globetrotter, Richard, who sets out to find a secret stunning beach on a Thai island, occupied by an off-grid community… and becoming more sinister and psychological as the fragile dynamics of the community begin to show. Definitely one to stash in your own backpack this summer!
Set during the scorching summer of ‘76, this family saga follows the dysfunctional Riordan family as they navigate their way through a family crisis, and how it alters their relationships and brings up buried emotions and hatchets! Eventually taking the family to a remote costal village in Ireland, this is a multi-layered story which explores familiar family dynamics and roles.
Last, but by absolutely no means least, is another classic American novel, On the Road. The beacon of Beat Generation literature, Kerouac’s epic road trip across the US is largely based on his life experiences and real friendships. The book is jam-packed with Americana and Beat Generation references – a real snapshot into a unique subculture and particular timeframe. Plus, road-trip novels just automatically make us think of summer too, so it’s a great one to add to your hand luggage!
