World Earth Day means many things to many different people. It is a day of celebration - to celebrate the earth we live in; it’s a day to educate, to learn about the world around us and how it has changed in recent years and how it will continue to change in the future; a day to get involved, to get stuck in and do your bit to improve our home. But it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom, as you’ll see, you can use this day to have a little fun and to enrich yourself and the earth for a brighter future.
To help you make the most of World Earth Day we have put together a few ideas to make it a day to remember.
You have probably heard this a million times before but there is a reason for this. Did you know that according to theworldcounts.com we will consume around 5 trillion plastic bags this year (yes, that’s 5,000,000,000,000) and with those bags we will only use them for an average of 12 minutes before they are discarded, which really isn’t long considering they can take up to 1000 years to break down. Moving on from the depressing facts, it is so easy for you to make a difference just by using one or two reusable bags.
According to research, we as a nation spend an average of 3 hours every day on social media. On top of that, we spend around a thousand hours watching TV every year! So, this year why not use World Earth Day as a day off from electric. Yes, that means everything, put your phone down, turn your TV off, and just enjoy the day free from all digital distractions. Detox your mind and refresh your eyes. Enrich yourself while you enrich the planet.
Check out your local farmer's market this World Earth Day and discover all your locally grown produce! We all know that locally grown veg tastes better, and when you buy locally produced food you are hitting two birds with one stone, firstly, you are supporting local businesses and farms and secondly, you are reducing the carbon footprint of the meal that you eat because the ingredients don’t need to be flown across the world to your plate.
Why not take World Earth Day as an opportunity to take your daily routine and mix it up a bit, you don’t need to go wild, you can simply give walking or cycling to work a go. Not only will you be reducing the emissions you produce every day but walking and cycling are fantastic ways to keep fit. Now, this may not be feasible for everyone and making this change may seem like a huge change-up but remember, every journey starts with the first step.
Time to get your hands dirty, whether in your garden or in your house, use this World Earth Day to get planting and turn your home into an ecological sanctuary. Filling your home with plants not only makes your home look and smell fabulous but they will actually be improving the quality of air in your home. If you have enough space, you could even go big and plant yourself a little forest, but hey let’s start with some succulents first.
These are just a couple of ways that you can celebrate World Earth Day without breaking the bank and in most cases not spending a single penny. And of course, don’t forget that selling your unwanted CDs, DVDs and books to WeBuyBooks is a great way of making some extra while you recycle!
