Five Uses For Old Books

Five Uses For Old Books

Although many people now favour reading devices over books, there are still hundreds of thousands of traditionalists who love the smell, texture and appearance of the humble book. The problem for many is knowing when to stop. Can you, we might ask ourselves, truly ever have too many books?

Clearly, if you can’t find your bed or reading chair, the answer might be yes, you have a few too many, but if that’s the case, what do you do with your unwanted books? The following five uses for old books might give you a little inspiration:

Craft1. Crafting

Whether you’re a novice or artisan, there’s no end to the number of art and craft projects you can do with the pages of an old book. From decoupage to paper folding, websites such as Pinterest and Distractify are filled with short and long projects for every level of ability; the only limit is your imagination.

2. Donating

Finishing a book doesn’t mean that you don’t love it any more. If you’re looking to find a loving new home for your books, why not consider a charity shop who can sell the books onwards to new homes and profit from the proceeds? You could also donate your book to a new reader in a disadvantaged area through Oxfam or the British Red Cross. Both organisations collect and ship books from various locations throughout the UK and ship them to where they’re needed.

Book Party3. Book Party

More often than not, word about a good book spreads through friends and recommendations rather than the marketing the bookseller or publisher does. Why not take this to the next level by hosting a book party? All of your friends could bring five books they no longer want and a plate of food or cakes for the table. At the end of the evening, everyone goes home having enjoyed a great night, good food and with a new set of books to devour and enjoy.

4. Recycling

If it is the sad case that your old unwanted book is simply beyond repair or is not worth saving, it may be time to consider recycling instead. Many UK recycling boxes will allow you to post whole books, whilst some councils have boxes solely for paper, books and magazines. Before trying to recycle an item though, it’s best to ensure that you’re going about it in the right way, so check with your local council before you make an attempt.

5. We Buy Books

If you know that there’s still a lot of life left in your unwanted books, why not see if you can find a new home whilst you earn some money? We Buy Books offer competitive prices together with fast transactions, whatever book you’re looking to sell. Simply enter the ISBN of the book you want to sell and we’ll give you a price immediately. If you’re happy with that price, we’ll forward a pre-paid postage label to you straight away. After that, you can treat yourself to a brand new book and the adventure that comes with it.
